OUTLINE OF THE INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES

Integrally, activities of the Institute for genetic engineering and biotechnology encompass scientific and professional work relevant for the development of genetic engineering and technology based on it. Those activities particularly include:
  • Implementation of scientific research (fundamental, developing, applied, etc.) and professional projects from gene to genomic level;
  • Valorization of B&H natural genetic resources and projections of their management;
  • Implementation of controlled program segments of scientific and technological development in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology for the purpose of food production, medicine, pharmacy, forestry and horticulture, protection of environment and related areas;
  • Expert analyses and studies in the system of quality control of living and working environment, provisions, GMO products, medications, hygienic, cosmetic, protective and other products;
  • Participation in the establishment, organization and implementation of biosafety system;
  • Cooperation with appropriate institutions in fields of genetic consultations, medical diagnostics, medicolegal and forensic practice;
  • Participation in the design and implementation of strategic segments and directions of scientific and technological development in related areas;
  • Programming, projecting and transferring fundamental, developing and applicable solutions in the field of primary competency;
  • Coordinating organizational and functional cooperation with University and other local and international institutions in the field of molecular genetics and biotechnology;
  • Participation in undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, post PhD education and specialization studies that serve staff employed in high education, economic, social and other subjects;
  • Mediation in establishment and implementation of inter-institutional and private co-operation among local and international partners;
  • Publishing scientific, professional, promotional and other material;
  • Performing other complementary forms of scientific and professional work in accordance with primary programs, upon contract or founder’s order.

LICENCED ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE

The Institute is licensed to perform overall scientific and professional service related to functioning and development of genetic engineering and biotechnology in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which includes:
  • Fundamental research in the field of gene (DNA), chromosomal and genomic engineering;
  • Fundamental research in the initial phases of development, projecting and transferring of biotechnology based on genetic engineering;
  • Creative participation in the process of programming long-term development projections of biotechnology based on genetic engineering in Bosnia and Herzegovina;
  • Coordination of scientific/research and professional activities related to establishment of adequate conditions necessary for implementation of priorities in terms of genetic engineering and biotechnology development in Bosnia and Herzegovina;
  • Implementation of strategic segments of the Program of scientific and technological development of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology for the purpose of food production, medicine and pharmacy, forestry and horticulture, protection of environment and other related areas;
  • Education of personnel on genetic engineering and molecular genetic research;
  • Education of personnel on development and transfer of genetic engineering and biotechnology at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina and internationally;
  • Analyses and expert studies in the system of quality control of living and working environment, provisions, medications, hygienic, cosmetic and protective products;
  • Cooperation with appropriate institutions in the fields of genetic consulting, medical diagnostics, forensics and medicolegal practice;
  • Providing appropriate research, educational and expert services to individuals and legal entities in the field of molecular genetics, genetic engineering, biotechnology and biosafety;
  • Coordination of organizational and functional communication and cooperation with competent international institutions in the process of creating research programs and performing research and educational function;
  • Publishing scientific and professional publications;
  • Other complementary forms of scientific and professional work (according to its own programs, upon contract or order of the founder).


LONG-TERM PROJECTIONS OF INGEB DEVELOPMENT

The Institute Agenda for the following period projects continuation and furthering of the current activities:
  • DNA identification and characterization of B&H natural biological resources;
  • DNA expertise in forensics and other medicolegal matters;
  • Collection and maintenance of human, animal, plant and bacterial cell and tissue lines – basis for cytogenetic, genotoxicological, molecular and pharmacological research;
  • Development of a system of biosafety and detection of genetically modified organisms (GMO); 
  • Construction of bioinformatics system for molecular genetic research;
  • Development of the Center for bioinformatics and biostatistics;
  • Engagement in the implementation of university curricula in the field of molecular biology.
